Across The Water For Skiffie Fest
Rowers from Eskmuthe joined forces with Alnmouth to take part in the 2024 Skiffie Fest.
The three-day event features leading clubs from Ireland, Scotland and England and is considered the main international competition this year.
Rowing in Alnmouth’s Enflaeda skiff (named after an ancient queen of Northumberland), the club put forward crews for the Open Mix and the 40+ mix races.
The 40+ mix race saw the crew get through to the finals and finish 8th overall. However, a technical malfunction in the Open Mix heats left the club missing out on the final.
Eskmuthe rowers also competed alongside Alnmouth crew in other races. Meanwhile, three rowers helped to make up crews in Eastern, Golspie and Killyleagh boats.
Both Golspie (Josh, under 40 Mix) and Killyleagh (David, 50+ Men) secured fourth place spots in the finals of their races. Sandra was also close to a medal with Eastern in a tight finish in the 60+ women's race.
Gaynor Allen, club chair, was among the rowers and said:
“This was a real test for the club. After good results in Ullapool and Strathpeffer earlier this year, we wanted to see if we could compete with the best clubs in Ireland.
“The results over the weekend show how much progress we’re making as a club with our racing.”
Club vice chair Simon Francis added:
“It wasn’t just about the racing, it was great to mix with other clubs, catch up with our friendly rivals, sample the hospitality put on by Down Coastal Rowing Association and enjoy the views of Strangford Loch.”
