Wild Conditions At North Berwick Regatta

Teams from Eskmuthe and across Scotland and northern England battled difficult sea conditions during the North Berwick regatta.

The highlight for the club was the gold medal for our u-18s boys crew in their first season in competitive racing - so well done to Adam, Findlay, Logan & Marcel who rowed brilliantly, coxed by David.

While younger crews sprinted from Craigleith Island to home, the older racers started the day going around the rock.

Conditions on the east side saw large side-on waves and swirling seas, while the conditions at the back of Craigleith Island deteriorated as the day went on

Despite this, the 45+ women’s crew of Kari-Ann, Rebecca, Carol & Wendy finished just one second off a medal in a field of almost 20 boats.

Meanwhile, the 45+ men managed a creditable 6th in the first race of the day.

As the waves grew to 6ft as the crews went around Craigleith island, the organisers shortened the course for the Mixed Novice and 240+ Mixed races.

The Eskmuthe crews got out and back safely before conditions got so bad that the last 3 races were abandoned for the day. The planned Bass Rock row the day after the regatta was also cancelled, which was very disappointing - but the right decision as the winds and seas were really high again.
